Prior to the January transfer window, Tottenham is keeping an eye on Kalvin Phillips, a midfield player for Man City, sources have told Football Insider.
Following Rodrigo Bentancur’s most recent setback in terms of injuries, Football Insider disclosed on Friday, December 1st, that Spurs are considering a possible trade for a new midfield player in the upcoming season.
The 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last week resulted in an ankle ligament damage for the Uruguay international, which will keep him out of action until February.
Additionally, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma will be representing Senegal and Mali, respectively, in the African Cup of Nations in the coming year.
Due to those three absences, Tottenham has looked into signing Man City’s Phillips. However, a reliable source has informed Football Insider that Spurs are aware of “massive competition” for the 27-year-old’s services.
The treble champions have informed the England international that he is free to depart in January.
With Sandro Tonali’s suspension, it’s thought that Newcastle is eager to sign Phillips during the winter transfer window, and West Ham under David Moyes is also prepared to sign him.
Juventus, the reigning Serie A champions, adore the former Leeds United star as well.
This season, Phillips has played in just eight games across all competitions, logging 215 minutes of action.
With just five starts under his belt since joining City for a rumored £45 million last summer (2022), the midfielder, whose deal runs until June 2028, is under contract.
Although he has acknowledged that he will need to think about moving away from the Etihad Stadium in order to keep his spot in Gareth Southgate’s England team, he is still a regular in the team.
