BREAKING NEWS: Robert Griffin III talks if Giants’ Tommy DeVito is a fluke

 

In the midst of Tommy DeVito’s ascent as an undrafted rookie sensation, it appears that former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III believes in the young signal-caller from the New York Giants.

In an interview with Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Griffin stated of DeVito, “I don’t think this is a fluke: He is playing the position at a high level.” “Not that he’s the franchise quarterback for the Giants, but he has proven to [head coach Brian Daboll] that not only is he good enough to get the job done and get them through a couple games, but now he is playing free and protecting the football.”

DeVito, who is 3-1 as a starter, has completed 83 of 126 passes (65.7%) for 855 yards this season, with three interceptions and eight touchdowns. During the three-game winning streak that raised Big Blue’s record to 5-8, he threw no interceptions and over the course of six games, rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

Hall of Famer Kurt Warner and Giants legend Tiki Barber are two of the people who have cautioned enthusiastic fans against getting too attached to the idea that DeVito will eventually take the starting position of the injured Daniel Jones. As for Daboll and company, one NFL scout said they’ve done a good job getting the most out of the native New Jerseyan this fall.

That scout described DeVito to Dunleavy as “an athletic quarterback who is a gamer.” “His coaches have discovered strategies to reduce some uncertainty in their judgment. If the first two reads aren’t there, they are letting him know where to go with the ball and allowing him to use his legs.”

Even though the Giants had a 0.4% chance to make the playoffs as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the ESPN Football Power Index, DeVito has grown to be a fan favorite and has teammates dreaming of a postseason run. This coming Sunday, when New York plays at the 6-7 New Orleans Saints, the 25-year-old will look to build on his most recent performance, which earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week recognition.
