Rumor has it that the Philadelphia Phillies are seeking outfield assistance for the upcoming season. Through the active trade market or free agency.
Tyler O’Neill, an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, has been mentioned as a potential.
That won’t be possible, though, as O’Neill has reportedly been traded to the Boston Red Sox, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
It will be interesting to see what the Red Sox actually gave up for O’Neill, as the return is unknown. It might have been too much for Philadelphia to respond to.
Though O’Neill had a career OPS of.776 and an OPS+ of 112, which is 12 percent above MLB average, he was the apparent odd man out in St. Louis.
The righty is a reasonably versatile defender who has played most of his time in either center or left field.
With the ability to play center field as well as left field, his above average approach at the plate and defensive prowess made him a respectable fit for the Phillies, helping to mitigate Kyle Schwarber’s defensive shortcomings in left.
Adam Duvall is the only other option that has shown any sort of traction at this moment to help with the outfield situation. Apart from the Phillies’ possible interest, which makes sense in terms of fit, nothing else appears imminent.
