A Cole Hamels retirement night has been added by the Phillies to their promotional plan for 2024.
Hamels, who played for the Phillies for ten seasons between 2006 and 2015, will announce his retirement from the team during a pregame ceremony on Friday, June 21 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Fans who are above 15 will get a replica ring of the 2009 National League Champions.
The southpaw gave up on baseball last summer after making several comeback attempts while playing for the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. In the 2020 season, he made his final MLB appearance with the Atlanta Braves. In 2021, he had shoulder surgery.
The final player still playing from the team that won the 2008 World Series is Hamels.
During the 2019 season, the Phillies staged retirement nights honoring Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins.
The Phillies’ preliminary 2024 promotion calendar highlights the ring giveaway and Hamels retirement night. The remaining significant giveaways are listed below. Usually, more are made public in the weeks preceding spring training:
- On Sunday, April 14, youngsters 14 and younger can get sleeveless hoodies.
- On Friday, May 17, a Bryson Stott bobble figure will be given to all fans.
- On Friday, July 26, a Bobble Turner figurine will be given to every fan.
