For a spell, it appeared as though every starting pitcher the New York Mets had or added to their roster was sidelined by injury. Hopefully, all those devils were subdued and Kodai Senga, their new star, stays healthy.
However, it appears that the curse has been transferred to a different team, as the Texas Rangers had to deal with Jaco deGrom’s past injuries last season, which resulted in Tommy John surgery that ended his season.
Another former Mets pitcher is now going to be sidelined for a while due to an injury.
According to general manager Chris Young, “Max Scherzer underwent surgery on his back for a herniated disk yesterday,” as reported by MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry.
Ahead of the 2022 season, New York agreed to a three-year, $130 million contract with their former ace. Before sending him to the Rangers around the trade deadline in the previous season, he was a member of the Mets for just over two seasons.
Max Scherzer pitched 253 innings for New York, compiling a 20-9 record with a 3.02 ERA in 42 starts.
Although the Mets received some excellent prospects back in exchange for moving the seasoned righty, it was bittersweet for them since he went on to win the World Series with Texas the previous season.
Landry further mentions that before opting to get the surgery, Scherzer and the group tried a number of treatments. He won’t be able to do this until June or July of 2024.
This offseason, the 39-year-old chose to exercise his $43.33 million player option in order to remain with the Rangers.
He is anticipated to play a significant role in the rotation once more as Texas looks to win the World Series for the first time ever.
