According to ESPN’s Seth Walder, the New York Giants somehow have a mathematical chance to both qualify for the postseason and obtain the second overall choice in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Giants might finish the NFL season on either end of the spectrum, despite their being just three weeks remaining in the season.
After securing a wild card berth and advancing to the divisional round the previous season, the Giants naturally entered the season with the goal of entering the postseason. Naturally, things didn’t go as planned, but they are still officially eligible for the postseason. This weekend’s setback drops them to the basement of the NFC playoff race, when they could have improved their prospects by defeating the New Orleans Saints.
With six teams in the competition having better records than New York, the Giants, at 5-9, are two games behind the two clubs that presently hold the sixth and seventh seed. The Giants will require a lot of assistance and can only hope that the other teams in the race drop a few of games in the final stretch.
It is also unlikely that the Giants will wind up with the second overall pick. The Giants have won two straight games because of Tommy DeVito, which has made it extremely improbable that New York will be selected in the top two. The Giants will need to depend on many victories from clubs like the Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals.
Rather than a playoff spot or a top-two pick, New York is more likely to receive a top-ten draft pick. The fact that the Giants are still theoretically alive for both scenarios this late in the season is still an interesting statistical quirk.
