After spending two different spells with the Boston Red Sox last season, the former player is moving on. This slugger never took off in Boston, despite the excitement made by his dramatic antics and striking similarity to Jason Mamoa.
FanSided’s Robert Murray said on Wednesday, “Sources: Free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro in agreement with the Chicago Cubs on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.”
Red Sox supporters began to take notice of Alfaro’s enormous bat flips as soon as he signed last winter.
After that, he starred for Triple-A Worcester after posting a.478 batting average (11-for-23) and 1.390 OPS in nine spring training games.
In 42 games with the WooSox to start the season, Alfaro hit.320 with 21 extra-base hits, including six home runs, 30 RBIs, and a.887 OPS.
By this time, supporters were calling for Alfaro to be called up, especially the ones who didn’t care about or respect his lack of defensive prowess.
All in all, though, Alfaro’s Boston years are best described as a “what if” narrative. The 30-year-old played in just eight games, hitting.118 (2-for-17) with a.368 OPS against dreadful defense.
As he tries to make the team in the spring, the Cubs will now have an opportunity to maximize his unique blend of power and athleticism. To a player who has some of the greatest hair in the game, best of luck.
