The quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders in the upcoming season is still being determined.Midway through the season, Aidan O’Connell, a second-year quarterback, was appointed the team’s starting quarterback. He went on to finish the season 5-4. Although the quarterback’s debut year went well overall, he did not perform well enough to guarantee a starting position for the squad this season.
This offseason, general manager Tom Telesco expanded the roster to include Gardner Minshew II, a former Adam Rank, a staff writer at NFL.com, recently offered his opinions on the Raiders’ quarterback position going into the season.
“With Jimmy Garoppolo starting at quarterback, [the Raiders are] better than Davante Adams felt, am I right?” Rank stated. “Gary Minshew is a reliable NFL quarterback, pay attention. Although he only had a 15–22 career record, as Anthony Richardson’s injury replacement, he almost led the Colts into the playoffs the previous season. Minshew set career highs in passes (3,305 yards) and wins (seven), earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
“Yes, over the course of five professional seasons, the daring signal-caller has an unimpressive 59:24 TD-to-INT ratio. However, he had a 7:2 ratio in games played against playoff clubs in 2023. Even though O’Connell played brilliantly in the last stretch, Rank and many others appear to overlook the potential of the second-year quarterback. Compared to his rookie season, he has a lot more resources going into this one. Additionally, he has more time to get ready as the team’s likely starting quarterback going into the season.
Even so, Rank thinks Minshew will defeat O’Connell to start at quarterback during training camp. If Rank is right, only time will tell.
“Aidan O’Connell is the other option under center,” he stated. As a rookie, the Purdue product, who was selected in the fourth round last year, was thrown into the starting lineup and had some potential, going 5-4 with a 12:7 TD-to-INT ratio. Having said that, I believe Minshew will prevail in this match.
