The position the Boston Red Sox are in is intriguing.
This offseason, Boston has been active in the trade market, having already acquired outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals and traded away outfielder Alex Verdugo.
The Red Sox needed to address the outfield position going into the offseason, and they are probably done adding at this point. Boston must now concentrate on both the designated hitter position and the starting rotation.
Though it’s unclear exactly who the Red Sox might target, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports that former Red Sox slugger Adam Duvall is one player who might be in the mix.
“The club believes an outfield group of (Wilyer Abreu), (Jarren Duran), O’Neill, (Ceddanne Rafaela), (Rob Refsnyder), and (Masataka Yoshida) is plenty capable, albeit somewhat inexperienced,” Cotillo stated. “They may still try to add a righty who can (designated hitter) while mixing in at first base (with second base another hole to fill).” They are no longer as likely to pursue a big right-handed outfield bat (like Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernández, or Jorge Soler on the free agent market).
“If the Sox believe Adam Duvall can cover some first base (a position he played early in his career), he makes a lot of sense as another option to join the mix.”
After joining in free agency last year, Duvall made an impression on the Red Sox. Despite playing in just 92 games due to a wrist injury, he still managed to hit 21 home runs, 24 doubles, and drive in 58 runs. In addition, he played designated hitter and all three outfield positions, slashing.247/.303/.531.
Considering that the Red Sox could use another right-handed bat, a move makes perfect sense.
