In 2024, Will Clapp will participate in sports for a third team. According to a team statement, the seasoned offensive tackle inked a one-year contract with the Bills on Friday.
Playing seldom, Clapp was a member of the Saints during his first four seasons in the league. The former seventh-round pick was primarily used by New Orleans as a guard, although he also saw some action at center. He signed with the Chargers in 2022, and during his time in Los Angeles, he played just in the middle.
Last summer, the 28-year-old re-signed a $1.23 million contract with the Bolts. Considering he only made three starts in the previous season, it seemed likely that he would play a supporting role this season. But Clapp became the team’s starting center when Corey Linsley’s heart issue limited him to just three games. Prior to sustaining a knee injury that ended the season in 2023, the latter started a career-high 11 games. Maintaining Consistency with The LSU product has a PFF score of 56.7 in his prior seasons.
With Linsley soon to retire, the Chargers signed veteran Bradley Bozeman rather than signing Clapp to a new contract. Therefore, Clapp will transfer to Buffalo for 2024 in an attempt to secure inside playing time. Ryan Bates was moved by the Bills earlier in the offseason, leaving the team without a depth player who could play both center and guard on a spot-start basis.
According to that contract, Mitch Morse would play center and Connor McGovern and O’Cyrus Torrence would stay at guard positions. However, the latter was among a number of veterans let go before the advent of free agency, thus McGovern is now positioned to move toward the center. As a result, Clapp might battle for snaps at LG, but he’ll probably be locked in as the backup center. After healing from his injuries, Clapp might be able to start in place of Bates along Buffalo’s revamped offensive line.
