Following a few seasons in which his status was unclear, Chicago Bulls guard Coby White is currently thriving in his role as the team’s indisputable starting point guard.
After a major knee injury forced Lonzo Ball out of the game in January 2022, his future and career were in doubt. As a result, White was given full control of the squad and has been taking use of his possibilities.
In a recent statement, Bulls coach Billy Donovan praised White’s selflessness and talked about his amazing journey, saying, “What I love about him is that he has a lot of focus on what can I do to impact the group.”
Lonzo Ball’s nonattendance
The franchise has suffered greatly since Ball’s absence. The Bulls were among the best in the league when Ball was on the court; after his departure, the team has collapsed, finishing the regular season in the bottom half and starting the new campaign poorly. Though it’s quite difficult to top what the former Bruin brought to the table, White’s flexibility and selflessness have been valuable qualities.
Coby seems to have the attitude that, “I just want to be out there, and if I’m out there, I’ll figure out where I have to play,” according to Donovan.
It can be difficult to get comfortable when playing with guys that get a lot of playing time, such as Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, but White has managed to establish himself as a solid facilitator and trustworthy shooter. He demonstrated both abilities against the New Orleans Pelicans, scoring 31 points with eight three-pointers and six assists.
“I think he’s a basketball player and a competitor and wants to win, and that’s really important to him. He’s always been good about what’s best for the team. It’s not like since he’s come here, it’s this one stable position he’s played all the way through. He’s very driven and motivated and has great internal belief and confidence in himself; he’s about how can I impact winning.”
desires to triumph
White is frequently described as a “tweener,” someone who is neither quite a shooting guard nor a point guard. But Donovan just thinks White is a really terrific competitor and basketball player.
