Pittsburgh and former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd have had “mutual interest” for much of the offseason, but The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly says things have taken a turn for the worse. “I am pretty sure the ship with the Steelers has sailed,” Kaboly wrote. The Steelers have been in the market for a wide receiver since trading Diontae Johnson to the Panthers earlier this offseason. They have reportedly come close to signing one of the top playmakers on the open market, but that is no longer the case.
Growing up in Clairton, Pennsylvania, and playing NCAA ball at the University of Pittsburgh, Boyd appeared to be a fan favorite. What then went wrong?
“From what I have been told, Boyd was extremely interested in Pittsburgh at the beginning of the free agency process, but the offer wasn’t something he was comfortable with,” said Kaboly.
Although it was thought that the two sides were in a “stalemate,” it appeared as though neither would give up as more time went by.
Boyd has been among the league’s most dependable wide receivers, averaging at least 50 catches and 650 receiving yards over the previous six seasons, so this isn’t the news that fans were wanting to hear.
Now that wide receiver talent is abundant, the Steelers will probably have to address the position in the 2024 NFL Draft. Fortunately for them, this is the case. Furthermore, Pittsburgh has been the best team in terms of selecting wide receivers after the first round of the draft.
Even so, Pittsburgh suffers a setback following an intriguing offseason thus far. The Steelers could have addressed one of their gaps if they were ready to invest a little money, but instead they will enter the draft with multiple holes to fill.
