For the Miami Dolphins, it has really been a day to remember—in a terrible way.
On Monday, the Dolphins lost their fourth impact player of the day. This time, it’s Andrew Van Ginkel, who allegedly reached an agreement to play for the Minnesota Vikings for $20 million over two seasons.
Losing Van Ginkel could be the most concerning development on a day when the Dolphins witnessed two teams make offers to two of their own, Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt, for agreements worth $100 million or more.
Van Ginkel, a 2019 fifth-round selection by the Dolphins, had an amazing season with Miami last season, playing in all 17 games and starting 11. In 727 defensive snaps, he finished with a career-high 6 sacks and a stellar Pro Football Focus grade of 90.7 with 90.6 pass rush and 87.3 coverage marks. Additionally, he demonstrated an outstanding 16.5% pressure rate in 321 pass-rushing snaps.
What’s even more troubling than Van Ginkel’s output is the team’s seeming inability to match that offer. It is rumored that the Dolphins were able to go under the cap on Monday afternoon by altering the contracts of Terron Armstead and rearranging Jalen Ramsey, Alec Ingold, Zach Sieler, and Durham Smythe.
