According to reports, Teoscar Hernandez, a free agent outfielder, and the Boston Red Sox are trying to come to an agreement.
Hernandez, 31, has played for the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays in addition to the Seattle Mariners, where he spent the previous season. He is eternal.159 home runs in 261 hitters. He hit a career-high 32 home runs in 2021 and was selected to the Toronto All-Star team.
Even if this isn’t an official contract, let’s examine all the various facets that are involved.
1) The Red Sox offense would be immediately improved by signing Hernandez. 2023 was a rather quiet year for him, but he still managed to drive in 93 runs and smash 26 home runs. By including him in the lineup, the team would have a right-left combination with Trevor Story and Tristan Casas in addition to Hernandez and Rafael Devers. Not only would the roster become more formidable and well-balanced, but Masataka Yoshida would also be included.
2) This club doesn’t really need offense, as good as Hernandez could make the offense and as tempting as that is. Starting pitchers are sorely needed by the Red Sox. Hernandez’s signing seems a little bit like signing someone for the purpose of signing someone. But they may also utilize Hernandez’s signing to open up a trade window for one of their young outfielders.
Regarding that topic, the team’s eligible outfield candidates right now are Wilyer Abreu, Yoshida, Ceddanne Rafaela, Rob Refsnyder, Tyler O’Neil, and Jarren Duran. They would most likely have to move someone from that group if they added Hernandez. A Hernandez signing makes a lot more sense if that person is used to getting starting pitching.
The Red Sox haven’t qualified for the postseason since 2021 and placed last in the American League East the previous season.
