According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Draymond Green, a key player for the Golden State Warriors, is actively taking part in a number of virtual meetings as part of his path toward reinstatement following his indefinite NBA suspension.
These meetings, which are attended by representatives of the National Basketball Players Association, the NBA, and the team, are essential for evaluating how well Green is doing in dealing with the problems that initially motivated his aggressive behavior on the court.
Following an altercation involving Jusuf Nurkic of the Phoenix Suns, Green was placed on extended leave on December 13. Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, Green’s agent, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., club trainer Rick Celebrini, and representatives from the NBA and NBPA are all actively participating in these talks, according to Wojnarowski.
Green’s suspension cannot be removed unless he fulfills “certain league and team conditions,” according to the NBA. After a string of violent incidents involving Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Nurkic, the NBA, NBPA, the Warriors, and Green worked together to create this unusual, indefinite punishment.
Green can work out and train with the Warriors, but a routine return to the team’s headquarters is not anticipated until early January. It is commonly accepted that, contingent on his development and any possible setbacks, his suspension may extend for 11 to 13 games.
During the seven games that the Warriors have played without Green, they have won five of them. As part of his four-year, $100 million contract, Green is forfeiting $153,941 for every game he misses this season because of his suspension. Green was eligible to be placed on the suspended list following his first five games of suspension. This means the Warriors can sign a replacement player, though they haven’t said they want to.
This season, Green has been shown the door three times, most notably during a Cleveland Cavaliers game when he received two technical fouls. In his six-year career, he has had six suspensions. Last year, the Warriors suspended him during the preseason following an altercation with Jordan Poole, a teammate at the time.
Along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Green was a key member of the Warriors dynasty and made important contributions, winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
