On Friday, the New York Giants placed kicker Cade York on injured reserve due to a quad injury, and they added veteran kicker Mason Crosby.
After Randy Bullock suffered a hamstring injury in the Giants’ loss to the New Orleans Saints last week, and Graham Gano (knee surgery), York is the third kicker the team has placed on injured reserve this season.
The 39-year-old Crosby steps in. After the 2007 draft, Crosby became Green Bay’s all-time greatest scorer with 1,918 regular-season points. However, the Packers chose not to re-sign Crosby following the season. He trained with the Los Angeles Rams from December 6th to the 12th.
Crosby has 395 career field goals made and is ranked 11th on the NFL’s all-time scoring record.
He will be active for Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and Crosby’s first field-goal attempt will mark the first time in franchise history in which the Giants have used four different kickers in a single season.
The Giants began the season with Gano, who missed 6 of 17 field-goal attempts as he dealt with the knee issue that eventually required surgery. Bullock took over for the next six games before suffering his hamstring injury on a kickoff following a 56-yard field goal against the Saints.
The Giants had planned to turn to York for the final three games of the season, but he left Thursday’s practice with the quad injury.
