Tommy DeVito, a rookie signal-caller for the New York Giants, was recently instructed by former New York Jets quarterback and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Boomer Esiason to “just worry about being the best player I could possibly be” and stay away from potential distractions like off-field public engagements.
On Wednesday’s episode of “Boomer and Gio” on WFAN, Esiason went into further detail about those remarks.
Regarding DeVito, Esiason remarked, “The young man is a very nice young man, and seems to have all of his priorities in the right place,” according to Ryan Chichester of Audacy. “I would simply tell him to play football, man, once more. Get off the field with all this other nonsense. To be honest, you haven’t done much. This is once in a lifetime opportunity for you. Keep it together Don’t blow it because of idiot things like this off the field. Just focus in on being the best player you can be the next three weeks…”
Although DeVito appeared to have done a good job of addressing a concern about the alleged tripling of his appearance fee, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post noted that the 25-year-old New Jersey native who was not selected in the draft finished three public engagements on Tuesday.
Although DeVito acquired a new marketing agency earlier this month, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Esiason said that the first-year player should have dedicated more of this week to getting ready for his debut on Christmas Day against the Philadelphia Eagles, who may be a furious 10-4 squad.
Esiason continued, “You gotta get away from all this nonsense off the field,” in reference to DeVito. “You do, truly. Really, you haven’t accomplished anything.
DeVito is 3-2 as a starter this year, but in the Giants’ 24-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, he completed 20 of 34 passes (58.8%) for 177 scoreless yards, effectively eliminating the 5-9 team from postseason contention. While it’s understandable that DeVito would want to capitalize on his unexpected notoriety, he should be aware that if he struggles in the next three weeks of the season, he may easily end up as another “whatever happened to” tale.
