The current Boston Bruins team defeated the New York Islanders 5-4 in a shootout to record a historic victory on the eve of another Boston Bruins Centennial celebration night.
Before Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak (1g, 1a) won it in the shootout, the team overcame two-goal and two-goal deficits to force extra time.
With 3:09 remaining in standard time, Mason Lohrei scored the game-tying goal, setting up extra time. James van Riemsdyk and Morgan Geekie also contributed goals and assists.
Linus Ullmark stopped 33 shots from the Islanders, including several huge stops during the penalty kill, proving to be the Bruins’ reliable goalie in the zone once more.

CLUTCH: The Boston Bruins have once again shown that dealing Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman is the worst move they could make on the NHL trade market, barring the acquisition of a Connor. Ullmark was the pillar of the Bruins on Friday, after Swayman’s 35 saves to save the team a point in their 2-1 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
He was instrumental in the Bruins’ two comebacks in the third period after making a stop that allowed Morgan Geekie to score on a powerplay.
BANGER: Alexander Romanov, a defenseman with the New York Islanders, was in “Beast Mode” on Friday night. It’s unclear if this was due to his Montreal Canadiens heritage or something else entirely. Romanov had four hits and one goal in the defeat.
DOGHOUSE: After a thrilling victory like this, it’s difficult to actually place a Boston Bruins player in the doghouse, so we’ll simply tag the entire squad. Even if it was an entertaining game for the fans and may foster team cohesion, this was a coach’s worst nightmare and not a recipe for success. The Bruins need to come to a quick realization that they make too many mistakes and standby times.
UNSUNG HERO: Jim Montgomery, the head coach of the Boston Bruins, mixed and matched to find several combinations that worked despite not having a top-6 center or his best defenseman. Montgomery is the current Jack Adams Award winner for a reason, and he has shown himself deserving of the honor thus far this season.
