Though it’s a touching tale, concerns regarding Jason Verrett’s potential to contribute on the field if he plays are reasonable. He returned to the San Francisco 49ers as a member of their practice squad.
With a well-documented history of injuries, Verrett has not appeared in a game since rupturing his ACL during the 49ers’ 2021 season opener. A short time after being removed off the PUP list in 2022, he tore his Achilles.
However, his first session since returning seems to be going well, and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ remarks should give them hope that they can rely on the 32-year-old should he be called upon late in the season or during the postseason.
“Love Jason man, I never had the chance, I just missed him when I left San Diego, great player, even better human being, all the guys love him,” Wilks responded when asked about Verrett at his press conference on Thursday.
“He’s a favorite in the locker room because of his past relationships, excellent movement, and continued ability to move effectively. I’m excited to get him on the field soon and am quite certain that he will be able to assist us at some point, whether inside or outside.”
Whether or not he plays, Verrett should have an impact on the 49ers’ secondary through his mentoring of their young corners, Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir, who have both shown promise this season and could start outside this week against the Arizona Cardinals because Charvarius Ward is still recovering from a groin injury.
“Our big brother is back,” Lenoir declared on Wednesday. He took Ambry and I under his wing when we first started [in 2021], teaching us the defense. The nicest feeling is when he returns and witnesses our advancement.
Regaining his sense of belonging was the driving force behind Verrett’s decision to ask to be released from the Texans practice squad and rejoin the Niners.
Verrett was born and raised in Fairfield, California, 45 miles north of San Francisco, and he did not disguise his happiness at being back with the Niners.
Regarding his stint with the Texans practice squad, Verrett stated, “It was just a way I could get reps.”
“I’ve always wanted to be here in my heart. Go ahead, I’m just relieved that everything turned out.”
Everything has worked out well for Verrett, who the 49ers had intended to sign sooner because to injuries at other positions, especially safety.
Now that he’s back in the location he obviously calls home, Wilks’ remarks imply the reunion will turn out to be a wise choice should Verrett play a part in the 49ers’ Super Bowl run.
