The first pick the Bruins made in the historic 2015 NHL Draft is being let go.Jakub Zboril, a 26-year-old defenseman, was placed on waivers by Boston on Wednesday in an attempt to find a new home after his stint with the Bruins came to an end.
The Bruins placed Zboril on waivers to allow him to see if another NHL team would like to give him a chance, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.
Zboril’s contract is not being canceled, and the blueliner is not aiming to play in Europe, according to Seravalli.
Teams can claim Zboril off waivers until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The skater is in the final year of a $1.137 million contract that is subject to a cap.
The Bruins selected the Czech native with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft, making Zboril the first of three consecutive selections made by Boston. After that, the Bruins selected forward Zach Senyshyn with the fifteenth choice and forward Jake DeBrusk with the fourteenth pick.
Though DeBrusk has been a mainstay in Boston’s top six lineup, Zboril and Senyshyn played the majority of their Bruins careers in the AHL.
Mathew Barzal (Pick 16), Kyle Connor (Pick 17), Thomas Chabot (Pick 18), Joel Eriksson Ek (Pick 20), Brock Boeser (Pick 23), Travis Knoecny (Pick 24), and Sebastian Aho (Pick 35) are notable players chosen after Boston’s three picks.
This season, Zboril did not play in a game for Boston; Ian Mitchell took up Zboril’s reserve position. Zboril had 19 appearances and contributed seven assists while playing for Providence in 2023–2024.
However, it was becoming obvious that Zboril’s time in Boston was running out when Mason Lohrei outpaced him this season as the next man up on defense.
Zboril averaged 15:38 of ice time per game, collected 15 assists, and scored a goal in 76 career games with Boston.
