The reporter responsible for the mid-day chaos has apologized, hours after whipping Toronto Blue Jays fans into a frenzy over the potential acquisition of prized free agent Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani was reportedly on a flight to Toronto on Friday, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, which may indicate that an agreement with the Blue Jays was nearing completion. However, that was not the case, which prompted Morosi to acknowledge his mistake on social media.
Morosi expressed regret on X, the former Twitter platform, for disseminating “inaccurate information.”
“I regret the mistake and apologize to baseball fans everywhere,” Morosi wrote in a tweet. “I am deeply sorry for letting you down.”
Ohtani was “en route to Toronto today,” according to Morosi’s earlier report of the day. However, the reporter clarified that Ohtani had no agreement with any MLB team, including the Blue Jays. Not long afterward, Bob Nightengale of USA Today challenged Morosi’s report, arguing that Ohtani wasn’t on a plane bound for Toronto, but rather was at home in Southern California.
In any case, the news disappointed Blue Jays supporters and others who had been tracking the private plane all day. In the end, the CBC revealed that Robert Herjavec, a Canadian businessman and “Shark Tank” star, was on the flight—not Ohtani.
Even with Friday’s craziness, Ohtani doesn’t seem to be getting any closer to deciding.
The Blue Jays are still in the running, but they are not eliminated by the fake report. In addition to Toronto, the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago Cubs are mentioned as possible landing sites. Ohtani isn’t ruling out a return to the Los Angeles Angels either.
When and where he ends up are still unknown. But Blue Jays supporters will never forget the day they were on the verge of signing the greatest two-way player in baseball history.
