Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy suffered a fractured orbital bone during the team’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 5, 2024. The injury occurred in the third quarter, prompting Van Noy to seek immediate medical attention.
Following the incident, Van Noy expressed disappointment regarding the response time of the Chiefs’ medical staff. He noted that it took approximately 12 minutes for an ophthalmologist to attend to him in the locker room, a delay he described as “unacceptable.” Van Noy emphasized the importance of prompt medical attention, especially for eye injuries, and referenced the NFL Players Association’s previous assessment, which had given the Chiefs’ training staff a failing grade.
In response, the NFL stated that, after reviewing the situation with both the Chiefs’ and Ravens’ medical teams, they were satisfied that Van Noy received appropriate care. The league expressed disappointment with the NFLPA for publicizing conclusions without a comprehensive understanding of the facts.
Chiefs’ Vice President for Sports Medicine and Performance, Rick Burkholder, clarified that the attending ophthalmologist was seated in the stands at the time of the injury, resulting in the 12-minute response time. He emphasized that having specialists like an ophthalmologist on-site is not mandated by the NFL but is provided by the Chiefs as a courtesy to both teams. Burkholder expressed regret over Van Noy’s dissatisfaction and mentioned efforts to address any concerns with the Ravens’ organization.
