Should the Buffalo Bills target a game-changer in their defense with their first-round pick in the NFL Draft—a chance they haven’t had since 2019—?
The Bills are slated to choose Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with the No. 13 overall pick in CBS Sports’ 2024 NFL mock draft.
According to CBS Sports, “Wiggins is a long, athletic, ball-hawking cornerback.” “In ’23, he had two interceptions, including the game-winning one against Drake Maye and UNC. His ability to tackle in the open field was his greatest concern heading into the season, and he improved this fall.”
Wiggins had two interceptions in the regular season, one of which he returned for a touchdown. In addition, he defended six passes, forced two fumbles, and had a sack. Along with a career-high 14 passes defended and a 98-yard pick-six, Wiggins enjoyed another successful season in 2022. He has 19 passes defended and 60 total tackles.
The 6-2, 185-pound defensive back was chosen by the Associated Press and the league to be on the first team of the All-ACC.
In mock drafts, the Bills have often selected cornerbacks. Buffalo selected Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean, who has seven interceptions in his NCAA career, in a prior CBS Sports mock draft.
Wiggins or DeJean would provide some much-needed energy to a defense that has given up three game-winning drives this season, especially with the Bills’ doubts about their secondary beyond this season. Five games into the season, Tre’Davious White, an upcoming free agent, tore his Achilles. Kaiir Elam, Buffalo’s first-round selection in 2021, has missed more games due to injury than he has played during the current campaign.
