Former Baltimore Ravens tight end Hayden Hurst, the team’s first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Amnesia by an independent neurologist, according to a social media post from his father, Jerry Hurst.
Hurst, 30, took a hit in Chicago against the Bears on Nov. 9 while playing for the Carolina Panthers, and that contact apparently caused the injury.
“Slow recovery, don’t know when he’ll be back,” Jerry Hurst tweeted. “Prayers appreciated.”
Post Traumatic Amnesia is defined as “the time after a period of unconsciousness when the injured person is conscious and awake, but is behaving or talking in a bizarre or uncharacteristic manner.”
PTA is characterized by “a state of confusion and can have no memory of day-to-day events” in the affected person. Hurst’s ability to function in daily life and as a football player is undoubtedly compromised by this ailment
Before being traded to the Atlanta Falcons, Hurst, who is 6-4 and 250 pounds, played his first two seasons in the NFL in Baltimore. He was a productive player for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, racking up 52 grabs for 414 yards and two scores.
In March, he inked a $21 million, three-year contract with the Panthers. He has 18 catches for 184 yards and one touchdown for Carolina this season.
