This season, the Chicago Bulls are faring much worse than anyone had predicted because the supposed benefit of “continuity” has not materialized. After 21 games, the team’s.500 mark is considerably below it. However, because of the young person from North Carolina, there is still hope. This season, Coby White has improved greatly! The team’s recent victories over the Pelicans and Bucks were greatly aided by him.
Acquiring his Own
Coby has averaged 20 points, 4.5 assists, and almost 4 rebounds on 48/50/97 shooting over his past eight games. He has been shooting with much more confidence lately, ranking eighth in the NBA in three-pointers made.
For the most part of his NBA career, White has been competent in catch-and-shoot scenarios, but this season, he’s been outstanding. Five of his seven 3-pointers per game come off the grab. And forty-seven percent of those are coming in.
Coby moves into favorable spots around the arc and patiently spots up off-ball players to get these shots. He also needs to prepare his shots well. You’ll see that before he lets it fly, he always has his feet in position and his hands ready.
Coby’s shooting gains are thrilling because they highlight how much more growth lies ahead for him. He made just 0.8 pull-up threes a game last season, shooting a dismal 27.6%. This season, after 21 games, he’s improved to 38.9% on 1.7 attempts per contest.
It will be interesting to watch if these shooting percentages remain true as the season goes on, and I personally hope to see Coby shoot even more 3-pointers off the dribble. His ability as a premier three-point shooter has been evident in the Bulls’ last two games.
Dimes Falling
Young guards frequently have trouble striking a balance between creating opportunities for others and pursuing their own shots. This was undoubtedly a problem for Coby at the beginning of the season. However, he has recently become more combative after allegedly “getting in trouble a lot for not taking [threes]”. Coby and the team as a whole have benefited from this change.
When Coby White plays, the Bulls’ offensive rating rises to 113.7. This season, that is about average for the entire league. But when Coby sits out, their offensive rating falls to 104.02 (according to PBP Stats). This is a testament to both his playmaking skills and the value he brings as a shooter.
Opposing defenses are paying greater attention to his improved shooting threat. When you combine that menace with his agility and handling, you have a player that consistently receives paint touches. This implies that he will have an open layup or that teammates who are willing to receive dimes will have open shots.
In pick-and-roll situations, Coby deftly maneuvers his guy into the screen or out of it by probing through defenses. His eyes are constantly on the floor, searching for the ideal shot to help his team win.
One of the Bulls’ rare shining moments this season has been Coby White, who has been surrounded by trade rumors, team meetings, and defeat. I believe that Coby is making the next step because of his remarkable gains this season as a shooter and facilitator. From being a supporting player, he has developed into the main ball handler. It remains to be seen if this move will lead to wins on a regular basis, but Bulls supporters will undoubtedly find it to be an intriguing development.
