In a heartwarming and unexpected twist during a pre-game ceremony at TD Garden, both the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers paused to honor Bruins captain Brad Marchand.
What initially seemed like a tribute to his on-ice accomplishments quickly turned into something far more personal — and hilarious.
As players lined up on the ice and fans filled the arena, a video message began to play on the jumbotron. The screen lit up with a clip of Marchand’s wife, Katrina, standing in their living room, smiling wide. “Hi everyone,” she began, “I just wanted to say how proud I am of Brad — not just for what he does on the ice, but also what he’s about to go through off it.”
The crowd murmured in confusion until Katrina dropped the bombshell: “We’re 12 weeks pregnant… with TWINS!” The entire arena erupted in cheers, while Marchand’s jaw dropped in shock as his teammates patted him on the back and laughed.
But it was what she said next that had the entire building roaring with laughter and sympathy.
“Brad, I hope you’re ready,” she added with a wink. “Because two babies mean double the diapers, double the feedings… and zero sleep for Daddy. Your chirping skills won’t help you now!” Laughter filled the arena as the camera panned to Marchand burying his face in his gloves, shaking his head.
Even Panthers players joined in on the celebration, offering playful nods and stick taps on the ice. Matthew Tkachuk was seen mouthing, “You’re doomed, buddy,” from the opposing bench, while Bruins’ coach Jim Montgomery jokingly handed Marchand a pacifier during warmups.
The moment created a rare scene of unity between two rival teams, with the Bruins and Panthers forming a circle around Marchand at center ice, giving a spontaneous stick salute to him and his growing family.
Later, in the locker room, Marchand laughed about the surprise. “I thought maybe they were retiring my number or something,” he said. “But this? Yeah, this is way bigger — and scarier!”
The Bruins went on to win the game, but the real highlight was the unforgettable moment shared before puck drop — a reminder that even in the rough and tumble world of hockey, family (and a good laugh) always comes first.
