Following his team’s victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Christian McCaffrey, a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, had a calf injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed concern about the injury.
The 49ers will not require McCaffrey’s services when they play the Los Angeles Rams next weekend since they have already secured the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC.
After the game, Shanahan told reporters via San Francisco’s official YouTube account, “I don’t know if we would have been able to go the next week or not, but we’ll have to find out more tomorrow.”
Shanahan’s statement isn’t really consoling, because we all know that calf issues are serious issues.
Thankfully, the 49ers have already guaranteed themselves a first-round bye. This means that McCaffrey will get two weeks off in Week 18 if the team decides to rest him, which is likely, before he must suit up for the Divisional Round of the playoffs later this month. Hopefully McCaffrey will be completely recovered by then.
That being said, San Francisco clearly didn’t want to hear this as it gets ready to go all out for a possible Super Bowl run.
In the Niners’ victory over the Commanders, McCaffrey ran the ball 14 times for 64 yards and caught four passes for 27 yards.
The NFL’s top halfback has led the league in running yards (1,459) and rushing touchdowns (14) this season. In addition to hauling in 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven touchdowns, he is averaging a strong 5.4 yards per carry.
Some believe that McCaffrey should be at least given consideration for the MVP title this year, even though no running back has won it since Adrian Peterson in 2012.
While no running back has won the MVP award since Adrian Peterson in 2012, there are some who feel that McCaffrey is deserving of the honor this year, or that he should at least be considered for it.
One thing is for sure: the 27-year-old will be making his third trip to the Pro Bowl this winter and will also probably earn his second First-Team All-Pro selection.
The 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey in a midseason trade with the Carolina Panthers last year. San Francisco is 12-4 on the season.
